3stringer Ed Wright Longboards

Ed Wright stopped by the shop this week. He just turned 69 years old.
Ed founded Sunset Surfboards in Encinitas in the late 60’s, but before that he learned to shape surfboards in the very spot he is standing in the early 60’s when our building was Surfboards Hawaii. Soon after owner John Price moved Surfboards Hawaii to downtown Encinitas into the La Paloma theatre building. Ed worked there until starting Sunset.
*side note, my Dad Peter St Pierre and my father-in-law John Smith also worked at Surfboards Hawaii. So did a guy named Al Merrick who went on to have a decent shaping career. The Sunset factory crew formed Moonlight Glassing in 1979.
We currently have a couple of nice 9’6″ 3stringers Ed shaped in stock.
9’6″ x 23″ x 3 1/8″
Roundpin and wood block square tail.
Both boards have rare original 1979 Moonlight Glassing logos. The 35 year old ink and rice paper actually glassed out okay.
Surfy Surfy Surf Shop is inspired by Ed’s original Sunset Surfboards.
We also stock Sunset Surfboards by Ed’s protege Brian Fredrickson.

9’6″ Wegener Redzilla

Jon Wegener dropped off this clean 9’6″ the other day.
He calls it the “Gabezilla” model.
9’6″ X 23 1/4″ X 2 9/16″
Jon sez,
A highly tuned longboard for noseriding. It has a thinned out nose and tail to keep the board flexing, which prevents slipping out of steep sections. Also a long deep concave in the nose adds suction to add seconds onto each noseride.

10’1″ Donald Takayama

This is a rare one for Surfy Surfy Surf Shop, a Donald Takayama longboard.
10’1″ length x 24″ width x 3 3/8″ thickness
Green weight US Blanks, cedar stringer, double 6oz deck, nice resin tint, glass-on single fin.
Signed by Donald R.I.P.
Previously owned, near mint condition, small ding on the bottom (see photo #9)
(we are not a DT dealer, for stock we send you to Mitch’s North).

9’2″ Surfy Log

9’2″ x 23 1/4″ x 3 1/8″

Confused by all the nouveau surfboards with stabby edges? Then ride the Surfy Log.
A clean and pure surfboard with a simple classic buttery ride.
Handshaped by Mike Slingerland in Encinitas, California.
A tribute to my magic 9’2″ Terry Martin longboard.
This board is stock at Surfy Surfy Surf Shop in trendy/funky Leucadia, California.

Jim Phillips Exotica Longboard

JPNR (Jim Phillips Nose Rider)
9’6″ x 23″ x 3″
Fabric inlay, pinlines, resin tint, gloss and polish.
The bottom features a huge 24” deep dish concave for lift that is perfectly paired with the long and low rocker which exits the tail with a slight kick.
The bottom contours aft of the concave show a subtle roll allowing it to softly settle into the wave.
Full, soft, 50/50 rails from nose to tail are foiled to keep some thickness up front while tapering in the rear for sensitivity.
And, this board will mix up a pitcher of Mai Tais while you listen to your Martin Denny record collection and build that Surfite model kit.
