Ruin Your Surfing for only $695.00

Displacement
Words and Photos by Gothic Dolphins

Hull and stubby explorations fill the reels of Alex Kopp’s gay-for-trim film, Displacement. Now that we have the issue in our hands, we’re not sure what we were thinking. Is this an art-zine installation? A class project? A 16-page free advertisement for a surf movie? We’ll leave that up to you, dear readers. For what it’s worth, the filmmaker promises that, “[The film] covers all of these issues and more in exhaustive detail, finally explaining the Transitional Displacement Hull and the people who ride them in plain language for the average surfer.” He also notes that hulls are “here to ruin your surfing.”

that was one of the more painful pieces i have ever read in TSJ. I did my time with greg l’s hulls and now would rather ride a 5 fin bonzer

It’s true. Hulls will ruin your surfing.
Just like reading in the dark will blind you.
Running with sharp objects will take your eye out.
But think how much fun it is to run after someone clutching a pair of scissors or being so engrossed in a book that you didn’t even realize it got dark and you’re holding the book 1″ from your burnt out eyes.
    That’s JUST LIKE hull riding.

so you are saying riding a hull is like chasing a guy down so’s you can cut the last page out of the book he’s reading, before he gets to it, in the dark? 😉

You should have saved the $1500 stimulus Bush sent you last year.

I, like J-P, look forward to TSJ arriving. This month, most of it, as usual, was superb. The Hull article was crap, disjointed, pseudo-art. I gave up trying to ‘read’ the text about halfway through and found the glorification of low quality tagging inane.

Perhaps I did not ‘get it’, perhaps I would prefer to gather a better understanding of how hulls work.

I’m not into artsy-fartsy writing but I found just grazing over the article/ad to be entertaining with a few cool photos to boot. NEver ridden a hull, but as bad as I’m surfing lately I think it can’t ruin me to badly.

I did like how he only named 1 surfer in a photo caption. And the Chris Malloy bottom turn, color photo, was pretty amazing. Otherwise, classic Kopps.
