Gift from the Heart

On our shop opening night, in the middle of all the chaos, Eric “Bird” Huffman and his family walked in with this authentic Caster surfboard and presented it to me as a good luck gift. Needless to say I was overwhelmed. Billy Caster was my Dad’s best friend when I little kid and his influence on me has stuck with me my whole life. I own the last skateboard Caster ever made, but I have never owned one of his surfboards. I am so stoked I don’t even know what to say.

I was also honored that members of the Caster clan showed up, including Dave Caster’s new baby boy, Billy Caster.
Bird has been a staple at the iconic surf shop in Pacific Beach, South Coast/Windnsea. He is also a great resource when it comes to surfing history and vintage boards.

Bill was one of my best friends and an amazing mentor when it came to surfboard design. I rode that exact design for quite a while with Bill, Chris O’Rourke and I refining the wings, rocker and football concave placement. I preferred to have a concave on the underside of the wing as well as the shape on the rail as shown on the picture. It was one of my all time favorite boards and loved to be placed deep in the barrel. If anyone ever finds one of my old autographed models I would sure love to have it for old time sake.
