It’s really a bummer that the only board the general public sees from Malcolm are “speed eggs” and Bumblebees…two crutches if you ask me!
JP – I challenge you to show some pics of some “high performance” bonzers with modern rails and thin foils. Hopefully you don’t have to wait until my next one makes its way through the shop!
Personally I agree with WYD about promoting the high perf. shortboards, for the world needs to be reminded constantly that not all bonzers are retro. It needs to be said that ,even though MC does shape alot of retro stuff, he’s just filling orders. He’s not a retro shaper or person. The more 5 fin shortboards out there, the better for the world to caress the bonzer’s pure futuristic design. That being said; I happen to like ’em all and have embraced the 2007 “speed egg” which has been named “The Troublemaker”.(It’s a 6’4″ very contemporary egg or SURFBOARD) Not a funboard or a cheater but a surfboard. Merry days!
OT really gets the credit for a lot of the retro -inspired shapes you see now in bonzers, or at least bringing them back in a totally updated way..malcolm is anything but retro and I understand some arm twisting was done to get him to do them at first…The reason you see so many retro types posted is that people are ordering them and into them because they work so good..the bonzer set-up and concaves and malcolms killer shapes add octane and control to the great concepts of past boards—width for planing, speed through turns, etc… There are many high performance bonzers out there but for some reason, youre right, too few pics posted.
I have a 8-5 Speed Egg that I think is very “high performance” and advanced. The only conditions that do not seem appropriate for the board is Viva la Huevo!
I wasn’t saying the boards don’t work, just that we don’t see pics of the “ferraris” as I like to call ’em.
I have noticed that I’ve yet to see a “stock” (non-custom order) MC bonzer that I would consider a high-performance model, one that I would buy myself without having ordered it…and I’ve seen a few stock boards at Moon unit.
I’ve got a stock 6’4″ bonzer shortboard that’s as modern and “high performance” as anything you might get from CI, Rusty or Lost. It was one of 5 in the rack at the time at Ventura Surf Shop. I’ve also got a 6’10” pintail semigun. MC shaped for me to take to Indo a few years back.
Neither one has much foam, a wide nose or a wide tail and both are about 18.5″ wide. If thats what you want, maybe thats what you should ask for, like I did. Besides, I think I’ve seen a few pics of Taylor Knox and some Malloy posted here riding some pretty “high-performance” outlines.
On another subject, can I get a cool fabric inlay on my next “low-performance” egg? Please?
anonymous…I get the sense that you read my comments to mean that high-performance bonzers don’t exist. That was most definitely not my point. In fact, I own several high-performance bonzers, most in size between 5’11” and 6’4″.
wyd- Actually if you follow this blog regularly you can see all sorts of “high-performance” bonzers even if you restrict their definition to those closely paralleling modern thruster outlines. I went looking for the post in which my 6’4″ appears and came across a few shots that are (I think) what you’re looking for:

December 23, 2006Every surfboard design has it’s purpose. Don’t blame the design for poor etiquette by the rider. Or is it eggiquette?
