Bonzer Archaeology: 1990’s Bonzer/Thruster
Recently I spotted this orange egg sticking out of the bushes at my neighbors house. I got excited when I saw the iconic Campbell Brothers logo so I trespassed and dug it out. |
It’s a rare Bonzer/Thruster! |
Extra rare because this board was built with the now defunct Red-X fin system. |
The best part of pulling old surfboards out of the bushes are all the creepy spiders and insects stuck to it. |
Lots of little dings, but nothing major. |
Red-X was unique in that it went all the way thru the board and screwed in from the deck. It was pretty strong but most people hated it. |
Nice outline! |
Here are the dims. 7’3″ x 21 1/4″ x 2 13/16′ |
The Campbell Bros Bonzer concaves work insane on thrusters. |
1990’s Malcolm Campbell logo. |
I had Randy the Ding Guy do a clean up and patch job. You may see me riding it this week. |

November 6, 2013Only JP would find a bonzer sticking out of some bushes, and not in some Mafia “it just fell offa truck way”. The last thing I found in the bushes was a dead cat. My life sucks.

November 6, 2013Rad JP, nice score! Get ’em Randy, fix ’em cuz! I’d check the topside plug hole for any separation from the deck & put patches over all the plugs…fixed a few of those over the years Low tide reef can do some major damage on fin systems. I might have an extra set of Red X fins if you need them. Sold my Al Merrick Black Beauty (90’s re-surgance model) recently that had these in it & had to re-install the whole plug. Sweet outline to your board. Great shaper & strong testiment to a solid glassjob!
Aloha

November 7, 2013At Moonlight with Red-X back then we would glass a little football patch cap over the box on the deck. It worked well.
I have access to a secret stash of Red-X fins if anyone needs them.
