1972 David Nuuhiwa

Our trippy neighbor Dan has a thing for cool old boards from the 70’s. He brought down this David Nuuhiwa single fin the other day.

Triple red paper stringer glue up. Classic dolphin stencil airbrush.

Dolphin stencil detail.

The nose is a little beat.

The now iconic David Nuuhiwa eagle logo.

It’s always good when vintage boards have original fins. Note the old janky way of attaching early leashes.

It’s had it’s lumps of the past 40 years but it’s watertight. In fact, Dan rode it the other night.

Amazingly this board survived having a leash cup installed. Nice outline too.

This board was a Christmas gift! It reads, Merry Christmas David. Love Daddy, Fran  & Mayarie 1972

Dan has put this board up for sale SOLD at Surfy Surfy Surf Shop. It has lots of patina, has a soft spot on the deck. A little TLC and it’s good to go. Here is a clip of David Nuuhiwa from the 1972 film Rainbow Bridge,

The message written on the board is a really nice touch!

Any of you old buggers out there have experience with the legrope/fin connection? It must have really affected the performance of the board.

Being one of the old buggers, for me i just didn’t like the old leg ropes as they always seem to get under foot, i did wear them things when we use to go down to the point in Mex. Peace, taco’s & olas. Doug

It’s always trippy to see early footage of shortboarding. Everything was so new and progressive in terms of style, technique and equipment. That must have been awesome to be a surfer during the early 70’s/late 60’s!

Yes it was a good time to be a surfer back then, there were many days when the surf was smaller it would be just you and a couple of friends out at Swamis so much fun. THANKS JP for putting the Rainbow Bridge flim clip in, so cool to see David fin slippin on those waves, David was sooo cool. I also had a Dyno board but sold it as Marko use to make fun of me for having a board from Huntington,i sold it and got a Bahne. If you want to see a really good flim on that time slot see Sea Dreams, best surf flim ever!! IMHO. Peace, taco’s & olas. Doug

Dumbass, they were making fun of the idiots who were slamming the Choice logo on the 70’s style fish. Well, your heart was in the right place. Cheers.

Dyno? My pal, Jeff Spargo, sold them at Soundwaves in Houston, along with Corky Carrol Spacesticks. We always hooked up Corky with the local skanks. šŸ™‚

Great blog. Just a small correction, though – the Christmas-present surfboard inscription doesn’t read “Mayarie” – it’s “Marjorie”, I believe (once a very popular name). šŸ™‚
