New York Surf Rules
The above videos are from the Quiksilver Pro New York held in good quality surf.
Surfy Surfy has always been New York surf friendly and now the rest of the surfing universe knows New York gets fun waves.
Burning question for the old school New York surfers, was this mega-contest positive for New York surf culture or are you bummed on the hype?

September 11, 2011is that a bait question?
hard not to be stoked for little grommies that are hyped and get to see and meet people they look up to rip the waves they learn on.
hard not to be a little bummed at the over exposure. yeah, it gets really good here, there was one day of waves like the last contest day in the past 9.5 months, and you guys saw it.

September 12, 2011pretty absurd that a contest win in life threatening teahupoo will get you 75k, while a win in fun sized shoulder high beach peaks will bring home 300k.. thats a whole lotta marketing baby

September 12, 2011It was fun to see LB hyped, and probably good for its economy as well.
There were definitely a few more groms in my home break afterwards, but that’s now; in 6 weeks as the temps head south, the lineup always thins out.
I’m glad to see that they did their forecast homework. In my 47 years of surfing, there has usually been at least one decent swell between Labor Day and September 15th.

September 12, 2011I surf alone cause I know where to go. Last week I surfed the local spot at 6am and I could just feel the anti soul tool bag vibe. Fuck pro surfing

September 12, 2011Really glad the last day of waves went off and my sister texted me a picture of Kelly Slater and she got to see that sick heat against Kerr. The line ups all over Long Island have been just as crowded as Cali for years now and I don’t think the contest will have any detrimental effect. I think it’s great for NY to have the excitement of a big event. Once the industry circus leaves town it’s back to hurricane season for the locals. Sweet bait question.

September 13, 2011Don’t really feel the need to prove anything to outsiders about NY surf. I was out of town on a job and yeah I watched the comp from my hotel bed. Mainly to take notes on how the pros deal with the quirks of LI beachbreak. But pro surfing is mostly really repetitive and boring. If I was home I’d have been out getting my own action. And not sure at all that the comp scene is good for surfing in the end.
