Potpourri of Components

“This board and all of its components represent everything I’ve learned from all the shapers and designers who have taken the time to guide me through the complexities of outline, rocker, spiral vee concave, quad fin placement, fin toe-in and cant, fin templating, wings, hull entry, foil, tapered stringers, and rail profiles.”

Board looks sick, but someone put the ewing on upside down.

could someone explain the difference in ride between an e-wing, a regular wing, and this kind, which I believe is called a fluted wing?

Basic function of the wing is to get a narrower tail while keeping the width at the hip of the board. Everyone has their way to finish them off.

In addition to pulling in the tail, the wing also adds a release point for the water flow, which in theory should loosen the board up. The e-wing, or elevated wing, was also intended to add lift. My comment was just in jest. The board does look really frickin fun and I’m sure Manny’s use of the wing functions as intended. The guy can really shape a sick shred stick. I’m just a bit partial towards the e-wing design.

The inspiration for this board comes directly from Rusty Preisendorfer’s design which he developed in collaboration with Richard Kenvin and the Hydrodynamica Project. I don’t have anything to do with the Hydrodynamica guys other than knowing them as the shaping/design circles overlap here in San Diego. I just started making them for myself since it’s damn near impossible to get one shaped by Rusty himself! (he’s currently on a five-week hiatus in Tavarua.)

wouldn’t it be great to be rusty!

  • I am rusty.

  • I feel rusty, like I haven’t surfed in ages. Oh right, I haven’t.

    That E-wing isn’t upsidedown, that’s a ’70’s stinger design.
