Be internet bros with the Surfers Journal

The Surfer’s Journal has started a Facebook page.
Now you can poke them, find out what kind of Muppet and Star Wars character they are and invite them to parties and events! As I post this they have 912 friends.

You may have noticed the Surfers Journal banner ad above the Surfy Surfy logo. That is because I am part of the new TSJ affiliate program where if you, the humble Surfy Surfy visitor, decides to click the banner and be whisked away to the Surfers Journal website and then after a few beers decide to buy something from their online store then I get a small (and I mean small) commission. It’s a win win for everyone!

*note-The Journal is my first advertiser. I’ve had many ad offers over the past couple of years but never felt right about putting banners on Surfy Surfy. Since I sincerely love the Surfers Journal I am stoked about this partnership. I hope you don’t mind. If it bothers you please let me know.
Thanks!
JP St Pierre

J.P. Could you ask them why they put up current issues long before they actually mail the current issues to the subscribers who are close enough to come pick one up but see everything in the issue on the website before it hits the mailbox . I am a charter subscriber and it bums my stone ! Thank you …..i too love the Journal and i am super stoked that Ross is there now too .

Couldn’t agree more, about time you received more than praise for a great job, well done.

But please don’t whore your blog out, try to match the quality you already have.

Ditto on all the above , it’s a drag to see the cover before the Journal arrives in the mail, much less see excerpts , is the Journal falling victim to the fallacy that print is dead ?
Cannot wait to see that cover shot , i am assuming it is Kassia and from what i can see if Jackie O’ had surfed her noseriding style would look just like that ! Classic ….

I say whore away! I don’t care if I see tampon banner ads as long as it gives you some money for this blog.

Please, sell 1 ad slot to 1 qualified company (doesn’t make popouts, whatever) a month. I think 750 to 1k would be fair depending on your exact monthly traffic stats.

I beg you to do this.

Seems to be 3 issues here to sort out and 1 to admire .
    1) The cover shot of the Journal that did not come today is pure grace .
    2) Loyal subscribers and anyone else , including advertisers ( it’s reader supported …right ?)should not be able to see the cover until pulled from the nice tuff-paper envelope, it lessens the experience Pez !
    3) J.P. WILL ALWAYS do everything with the utmost decorum and class and is trusted by his rabid fans and earned free reign of his ground breaking Blog.

    Hey guys,
Stoked on your enthusiasm for TSJ and JP. An explanation behind the cover thing: We have to post the new issue “content” on line when we start selling that issue as a subscription so that people that subscribe online can see what they’re buying. This happens around 1-2 weeks before our subscribers get the issue in the mail.

We agree the printed magazine is sacred, and are contemplating some ways to keep that element of surprise for all our loyal subscribers while being able to accurately represent the subscription we’re selling… Haven’t decided how to do that yet, but we’ll figure it out!

Anyway, thanks again to all, and don’t forget to subscribe to support reader supported journalism all around.

    Oh yeah,
The cover photo is the lovely Balinda Baggs as shot by her husband, Dane Peterson.

    We love it too.

I don’t understand how seeing the cover of TSJ online ruins the experience of receiving the actual copy in the mail. As important as the cover is for a magazine it is less than 1% of the content. The best work is inside!

JP, don’t feel bad for taking on some ad space. If the advertisers match your content then all is well and props to you for making it happen! No body should be expected to work for free or “for the love” forever.

Thanks for the explanation TSJ , hell thanks for caring enough to respond.
I too am a charter subscriber and look forward to every issue , that cover is pure grace , it should be an Icon , hey maybe that is your Kemp Aaberg soul arch shot eh Mr. Pezman ? Probably ruffle the less secure males feathers though.
Surfy surfy and TSJ , it does not get any more real. Ross is an amazing pick up too. Well done.
Stoked for you all ; T.L.S.F.Boyeee

    ” Elementary my dear Watson”
For some there is nothing like the anticipation and then gratification of getting that TSJ in the mail , seeing that white package in the box jazzes me and then carefully opening it and making sure your hands are free of p.b.j. Slowly sliding that freshy out and feeling the quality and being instantly transported to where that cover shot is , then carefully turning the pages and getting jazzed with every turn , for me , it takes me back to when Surfer was bi-monthly and being a gremmie.
A quick hit on the laptop key’s can’t reboot that feeling booster ……..

TSJ, if it’s important to keep the cover a surprise for current subscribers, your flash slideshow about the new issue could have some simple interaction that hides the cover until the user clicks or rolls over a conspicuous cover image occlusion. šŸ˜€

In reality though, you can’t please all the people all the time, and I’d wager that the bummed people are so in the minority that it wouldn’t be worth it.

TSJ has lost approximatley 1000 subscribers in the last year. hope they are not offended that I am putting this out there. that’s a lot of lost revenue for them right up front.

TSJ seems to be utilizing new media a bit more in attempt to drive subscriptions back up.

I cannot afford to renew right now. so when I get lastest e-mail with “look what you are going to miss” gets me all fired up to buy a sub. also understand the new cover anticipation… surf porn at it’s finest. “umm, let’s undress her slowly and savor every second.”

TSJ banner on this site is a-ok with me.
