80’s Penguin

I recently spotted this old Moonlight board at a souvenir shop in the touristy section of Oceanside Harbor. It’s an early 1980’s Dan Van Zanten thruster under his Penguin label. It may have been made for the Rip Curl surf shop or for a Rip Curl team rider, I’m not sure what “Old Skull” written by the fins is supposed to mean.

Classic, My first custom board in the 1990’s was a Van Santen. I rode it because an older guy rode one at my local break that Surfers Journal recently sold out. That guy ended up starting RVCA surf co. with Conan Hays.

Old Skull was a really lousy punk band. I think they were all little kids or something. The lead singer was 9 or 10.

Old Skull was lousy, but they were only 8-9-10 year old kids with like at most 2 weeks of practice total. And they were from my home state of Wisco! Guess that doesn’t help its image, though.

When did Wisco become a state?
