Blanks from China. Uh, no thanks…

Ever since the abrupt closure of Clark Foam in Dec 2005 sleazy opportunist are stampeding to get into the surfboard blank market. Here is an example of the typical garbage that is coming from the new blank factories in communist China.

That’s the new asymetrical blank from cheapco!
Remember the asymetrical shapes (I think Caster was making them) in the ’80’s? Cheapco is prepping for a resurgence of the design. Very forward thinking, those Chinese!

Expect to see them at Walmart soon since 10% of their exports go to that retailer!

    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
    Mata ah-oo hima de
    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto,
    Himitsu wo shiri tai

    You’re wondering who I am-machine or mannequin
With parts made in Japan, I am the modren man

I’ve got a secret I’ve been hiding under my skin
My heart is human, my blood is boiling, my brain I.B.M.
So if you see me acting strangely, don’t be surprised
I’m just a man who needed someone, and somewhere to hide
To keep me alive-just keep me alive
Somewhere to hide to keep me alive

I’m not a robot without emotions-I’m not what you see
I’ve come to help you with your problems, so we can be free
I’m not a hero, I’m not a saviour, forget what you know
I’m just a man whose circumstances went beyond his control
Beyond my control-we all need control
I need control-we all need control

I am the modren man, who hides behind a mask
So no one else can see my true identity

    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo…domo
    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo…domo
    Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, domo…domo
Thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For doing the jobs that nobody wants to
And thank you very much, Mr. Roboto
For helping me escape just when I needed to
    Thank you-thank you, thank you
I want to thank you, please, thank you

The problem’s plain to see: too much technology
Machines to save our lives. Machines dehumanize.

The time has come aat last
    To throw away this mask
    So everyone caan see
    My true identity…
    I’m Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy! Kilroy!

That’s a big oops at the factory alright…
But at the end of the day if you don’t
like it or have no use for it don’t buy it.

    Shit doesn’t discriminate- China, Europe,
the Americas even here in the good old
USA! Tired of China/Asian “pop out”
bashing is all… It’s simple people if you
think it’s crap don’t buy it!

As representatives of world travel and
an openess to other cultures, I think
some of us may be missing the point.

Maybe Scott Bass can convince Kelly Slater to ride a board made from one of those assymetrical Chinese blanks then save the surf industry. From his editorial of Slater as Savior.”The surf industry loses. The surf industry needs Kelly Slater to win number nine this year. The economic trickle down effect Slater brings to the spreadsheet is large. This guy is mainstream. He transcends the sport. He may get paid by Quiksilver, but every company benefits from Slater’s ability to merge beautifully timed wrap-around cutbacks with beautifully timed bounce back relationships with beautifully stripped drives toward the tree on eighteen at Pebble Beach, with beautifully timed finger movements up the fret board with Eddie Vedder.”

If the companies are paid by getting cheap crappy blanks from exploited opressed foreigners, then let the industry implode.

    SURFMONKS UNITE!
