Skittles
Although Single Fin Fever has tempered some in the last few years these Machado Channel Islands single fins are still some of my favorite boards. The outline, rails and bottom concaves are really bitchin’. For some people the word Retro has morphed into a derogatory term, but I never considered these boards to be a step backwards.
Smooth as butter on a hot skillet, these boards are beyond an exercise in minimalism; the sophisticated details reveal that on close inspection. Providing solid surfing fundamentals the boards were/are a giant leap forward for many surfers.
See Machado’s clean single fin surfing at fun sized Black’s in the Cyrus Sutton film Riding Waves.

December 15, 2006These Machado single fins are the best boards ever.
I have three of the first version, a board a local made off the first generation CI single fin template, and an MSF G2.
I’ll never go back to riding a standard shortboard again!

December 15, 2006Single fins are always relevant, as are twins, quads, and bonzers. Tri fins are dangerous.

February 16, 2007I have talked to a shaper up here in Oregon about ‘Bonzerfying’ my CI Single Fin… I know, I know it won’t be the real thing but will it be worth the $100? He will put in four LokBox boxes, so I can still ride it single if the need be…
