Avery Hanel Donation Site now online

Hello friends of Surfy Surfy,

You all know our longtime surfboard shaper Gary Hanel. GH’s 2 year old granddaughter Avery has been going through chemotherapy for a rare disease. Avery is going to begin receiving stem cell therapy. Obviously Aveery’s parents Peter and Alex cannot work regular jobs during this time, so a donation site has been set up for them.

To donate a few bucks to Avery Hanel to her Go Fund Me site: clicky clicky

On March 28th 2012 Avery was taken to children’s hospital for what everyone thought was a flu. Our lives were turned upside down in the blink of an eye. What followed was a litany of tests, procedures, extended hospital stays, and treatments to sustain our beautiful 2 year old Avery while doctors searched for a diagnosis. 120 blood and platelet transfusions, 6 bone marrow biopsies and 7 months of chemotherapy later we have a diagnosis- MDS (myelodystlastic syndrome). Our next step is a stem cell transplant (cord blood). To make this miracle work this month we will be admitted to the children’s hospital, in the pediatric oncology ward for a minimum of 2 to 5 months of hospitalized ISOLATION. Starting with an intense regime of chemotherapy, to kill her immune system so she can receive the stem cell transplant. We are blessed that we have 3 possible matches.

It’s hard to talk about money when there are many more important things on our hearts but it too is a reality. Because of Avery’s extended hospitalizations and compounding medical bills we need help. We will be living in the Ronald McDonald house while we stay by our angels side during her brave fight. We are asking for donations to help offset all the costs. While all the money is going out nothing is coming in. We humbly ask for any help you can give, knowing these times are difficult for everyone. If you cannot give financially we ask that you hold our family up in prayer, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. These donations will allow us to be by our baby girls side while she fights the fight of her life. The Hanels

Another fine art exhibit by the Santos Gallery

Hello friends of Surfy Surfy,

Saturday October 13th is our next Second Saturday event, where we stay open late, listen to live music, have refreshments and hang out.

For this Saturday we doing something a little extra special. You all know one of our premier surfboard shapers Gary Hanel. Well, his 2 year old granddaughter Avery is going through a tough time. Avery and her mom and dad, Peter and Alex Hanel are spending a lot of time at Rady’s Children Hospital in San Diego these days.

Avery is undergoing chemotherapy and treatment for a rare and to this date, un-diagnosed bone marrow disease. Today will be her 5th bone marrow biopsy. Avery needs a blood transfusion every week.
Peter and Alex Hanel are a young married couple and have not been able to work full time jobs with having to spend many days and nights at Children’s Hospital.

So we are asking people to bring grocery and gas gift cards to Surfy Surfy to donate. For every gift card you bring with a minimum value of $15 you will receive your choice of a Surfy Surfy t-shirt or hat.*

Also happening next door to Surfy Surfy, the Santos Fine Art Gallery is having a reception for their latest artist Rod Villa. Be sure to check out his amazing work.

Ray and Ashley Orate will be behind the counter at Cafe Ipe aka “Coffee Coffee” serving up delicious coffee drinks from fresh roasted beans in house by Revolution Roasters.

*if you cannot attend in person please send gift cards to:
