Now that we are all connected by blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the term "local shaper" no longer means what it did 20 years ago. Now we all can order, shape and ship each other surfboads coast to coast and continent to continent.
That said, regional shapers are influenced by the communities in which they live and certain areas become hubs of surfboard building. Encinitas enjoys a long history of influential shapers and surfboard companies. This Surfline feature touches on a few long time local shapers and a few accepted transplants. Several shapers profiled are in regular rotation in the Surfy-verse.

So much history, and its exciting to know I have so many great local shapers at my finger tips. I come from a place where you can't even find a ding repair guy let alone a shop that's lifting up a local shaper. These guys are best kept secrets and It's nice to know there are so many other options to the cookie cutter boards off the rack.

Interesting read. Neat to know GH was a highschool math teacher. That would have been rad to have a shaper for a teacher! Wonder if he ever had any surfboard related math questions on the exam? eg. calculate the volume of a 5'8" fish...

DeleteManny started in SF but is now a SD transplant. SD should be happy and proud that Mr. Caro has chosen to ply his trade here. His boards are pure works of art and in a few years his name will be compared to Pavel, Lis, Frye and maybe even Greenough. He's that good.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the Sunset shapers Eddie was the only one that never shaped a board for me, but he was one of the people that i did look up to as a hard working and honest man + he was cool to let me hang with Marko at the factory down below the retail shop. Peace, taco's & olas. Doug

ReplyDeleteRight on, Pop! My dad, Ed Wright, has been a pillar in this community and I admire him for that. His attention to craftsmanship and "doing it right the first time" has been an influence on me. When doing yard work as kids he would say, "a half-ass job will take twice as long!"
