Gif Created on Make A Gif
Photographer David Gray sent me this sequence of Taylor Knox choosing to break trim on a wave so I turned it into a GIF animation for you to enjoy (unless you find GIFs annoying which most people do).

Here are some photos of Taylor Knox surfing bamboo fins

Todos Contest is GO for Sunday

Friday, February 26, 2010

Surfer/shaper/big wave hellman Gary Linden has organized a big wave contest at Todos Santos (the island off northern Baja with the big wave spot, you know the one).
The forecast for Sunday is 18-20 ft so they are running the event. There is no live webcast but maybe they will give results and upload photos to their Facebook page.
As always Surfy Surfy roots for Greg Long. Go Greg!

Nano Nano

I received a sample kit of this stuff in the mail yesterday. It truly is the 21st century. Year 2010 AD! No jetpacks or daily flights to the moon, but we got nano technology for surfboards.
Stray observations from the video:
1. Moonlight doesn't use cheater spray coat finishes, we do fine wetsand and polished gloss finishes.
2. If you are interested in a fast board don't put your sponsors mylar stickers on the bottom that will mess with the waterflow.
I'm going to give this stuff a try. I'm curious to see if it's snake oil or legit. I've got an open mind on this one. Anyone out there try it yet?

Moseley's Fine Art Slob Quad

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

A lot of people these days milk the "surfer/artist" vibe but John Moseley is the real deal. He's been scratching out an existence as a dedicated artist for decades. Today he showed up with his repainted Pavel bio-foam quad. We are hoping it glosses out.

Elevated Wing Mini-Merk

Tuesday, February 23, 2010

6'3" x 20 1/8" x 2 1/2"
Custom for Vincent who is soon to be a proud papa, hence the mini-Fish for his new baby.
This is a good application of the e-wing on the Mini-Merk Bonzer5 model, pulling in that wide tail but keeping that sweet hip. Nice and light blue 4 oz resin tint. White wishbone airbrushed on the hotcoat. Gloss and polish.
Of course, half of the original concept of the Mini-Merk was a production friendly Bonzer that didn't have a polished gloss tinted e-wing. Oh well, that didn't last long...

1990's GH

This is Dr. Bob's GH from the early 1990's. We have it at the shop because Dr. Bob is getting a new version of this board, inspired by this one.
This is an early slimmed down low volume board, on the cutting edge of contemporary 1990's momentum surfing. Note the glass-on fins signaling pre-FCS dominance.
The Moonlight logo is huge as the big 80's influence still lingers, but it's clean and simple and not neon green or pink so that is good. This is a refreshed GH logo with more organic lines as opposed to the original GH logo on this Astro-Egg. The super pulled in pointy nose is classic 90's for more critical surfing in the lip.
These big leash cups are no longer used, although I liked them because they were easy to feed the string through.
This board is extra snazzy because it has a Bonzer bottom. There was a time in the 90's when Bonzer bottoms on thrusters had a big push. The Campbell Brothers have a nice page dedicated to that movement on their website. Read 1990 Back to the Future
By the way, Dr. Bob is a second generation dentist operating out of Solana Beach, Ca. His mom and dad were my family dentist my entire life, and now Dr. Bob is carrying the torch and is our family dentist. Need a checkup by a trusted professional, family man and fellow surfer?
