Nano Nano

I received a sample kit of this stuff in the mail yesterday. It truly is the 21st century. Year 2010 AD! No jetpacks or daily flights to the moon, but we got nano technology for surfboards.
Stray observations from the video:
1. Moonlight doesn't use cheater spray coat finishes, we do fine wetsand and polished gloss finishes.
2. If you are interested in a fast board don't put your sponsors mylar stickers on the bottom that will mess with the waterflow.
I'm going to give this stuff a try. I'm curious to see if it's snake oil or legit. I've got an open mind on this one. Anyone out there try it yet?

  2. I hear if you put wax on the bottom of your board it goes waaaaay faster.

  3. Everyone knows stickers make your board go faster not slower.

  4. Wax your fins to throw more buckets. It grabs the water, creating more spray

  5. um, I'd call this stuff overpriced liquid acrylic. since when does a surface application produce enough energy to overcome gravity? "NJ waves are usually only waist high and under". Yeah, this will help overcome a 2 1/8" thick potato chip's inability to get up to planing speed on a knee high musher for sure!

  6. Darrick Doerner loves the stuff. If you want to call BS on him, go for it...

  7. Makes the fish swim faster after it has washed off your board!

  8. Any free samples available for manufacturers?
I'd be willing to give it a try.

  9. Educate yourself before commenting. Go to the website and look at the testimonials. For those of you who know DD, he does not endorse just any product ... especially when his business is riding 40' waves! Perhaps it is you that cannot handle the speed?

  10. OK, I admit it, I work for the Company and I have been very carefully educated, so I must be right.

    My name is Anonymous two.

  11. Yes! This stuff is amazing! I can't believe how fast I am now! Between this and my PowerBalance wristbands, I f'ing rip now!

  12. I live in Florida and this is my first post here. Since I've tried SNP I thought I'd post. The SUP racing guys here are all over it, saying they have won races because of it. So is USLA, and Peter Hickey, lifeguard guru in Australia is testing it. I tried it on my Loehr 9'0" and I was catching waves I had no business catching. Easy to tell the increased glide speed, compared to a sanded finish, and follow-through on turns seems better. Somebody should be able to put a stopwatch on crew boats to see for sure. It appears to be a sealer at the atomic level, so it's not a coating. Let us know what you find out, Surfy!

  14. I bathe in it

  15. Nothing like some good spirited chatter to keep life exciting! I have to admit that the surfing industry needs something to kick start it ..... and take back the turf that SUP's are quickly taking. I have used all the other products such as Dolphin Skin, Speed Finish, Ultra Glide. Let's see what Surfy says after he tries it!

  16. I found an on-line product review from ESM .... very positive.

  17. I still wear webs because everyone knows that ducks can swim faster than humans.

  18. it works on finger tips to! use regurly befoe blogging.

going to happy hour with buddies? you can get all the wings and mini tacos before your buddies have a chance.

hey i would like to intercept a truckload of it. then switch the labels on the cleaner and the go juice and mark the packages as "specially formulated for SUPs!

  19. A Guy I knew used to rub soap on the bottom of his board n fins. he would say it was faster ... as he bubbled into the lineup.

  20. If we are talking about speed what about that golfball texture to get greater release. it is used on race boats, planes and all kinds of things. UCSD, Scripts Institute and blacks are somewhat in the neighborhood maybe someone there needs a project.

  21. If you use that to brush your teeth can you get by brushing once a week?

  22. Dudes, don't waste your time with that stuff. I have some magic beans that are the real deal and I'll give you a bro deal on them. They make you surf faster, your girlfriend hotter, AND increase both length and girth!

  23. I am going to put some KY on top of my glass finish and be going Mach5 in no time. Up and over that mush I will be. No beached is for me.

  24. Does it work on my foam board?

    ReplyDelete
  25. seems like this kind of product would be really easy for an independent group to test in a scientific manner, and then we wouldn't have to rely on 'seat-of-the-pants' testimonials (DUDE I SWEAR IT WORKS I FELT SO RAD! NO I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THE PLACEBO EFFECT, WHY DO YOU ASK???). Shit, the surf mags could easily test this stuff out a-la consumer reports. Wish they really would. *not holding my breath*

  26. Can I use that on my alaia or would that just make it fast food for termites?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have been using this for a year now and i love it. I recently went to Puerto Rico and applied it to some of my friends boards and everyone was stoked on it. It adds a glide to the board that is like nothing else i have felt before. everyone said they're boards felt like they had more flow and drive through turns. It is really worth trying. Everyone that I know that has tried it, loves it.

  28. lifesize Snookie poster. hehehe.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I tried it , there is a noticable differance catching waves, I had a no paddle take off. That hasn't happened in a very long time.I was also making more sections and getting longer rides! who is snookie ?

  33. I am late to the party here, but I wonder if this stuff is similar to Rain-X, which makes water bead off your car windshield something wicked. I doubt that So-Cal dwellers have ever heard of such a thing, but it is common in parts of the world with 'rain'.

This stuff may well work, but I doubt that it is a custom formulated compound. Most of these miracle potions have legitimate industrial uses (such as being a concentrated active ingredient of floor polishes) so can be ordered in large drums then sold in little bottles for a great mark up.

Some folks are surfer/artists whereas others are surfer/entrepreneurs.

All good comments. Hope this clears some things up. The chemistry is proprietary. The product, which comes in an alcohol solution, contains millions of glass and ceramic particles that once applied and allowed to cure (haze), are molecularly bonded to the surface. This "nanomesh" creates high contact angles with water droplets when they hit the surface, creating a "bouncing effect" rather than a "spreading effect" from an untreated surface. The chemistry was actually developed as a "Rain-X" alternative for glass. We simply applied it water and snow sports. All the competitive products that we have researched (Dolphin Skin, Ultraglide, On-It, and household waxes and pliches) are topical ointments (wax, silicone, teflon) which are not permanent and leach into the environment. Our product will only come off from abrasion (ie/ sand, handling, etc). It is very difficult to simulate ocean conditions in tests, but SUP time trials have shown a 5% - 12% increase in speed. We also have a growing list of testimonials to back this up. It's not a magic potion, but it will elevate your game to the next level, making your surfing more competitive and fun. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

  35. This stuff seems like it would inhibit laminar flow(?).

    ReplyDelete
  36. Laminar flow is an interesting aspect (vs disorganized water in motion). Though I would think more complicated to test in a surfing application.

But if an enginering student took a project like this to a Prof. Especially narrowing the scope a bit to frictiion (the speed and release aspects) the prof would work out some feasible tests and testing methods. Then it is just follow through through and lab reports.

The equipment available a university can make this so easy.

In know an enginere who did this type of tests for a major ski company. A company I used to work for in the water sports industry did this from time to time. Often we mentioned it to enginereing students from the surf team. Profs are excited when students are exited.

Students (especially if they surf or have a personal interest in the application - or just the bragging rites) can have something "fun" to work on and a company can get a phenominal study for $250.00 - $1,000.00

  37. Surfy should have a report for us any time now, after use on his board. I put it on my board a few months ago and I still go faster and catch waves easier than before. It's easy to see that it is faster on most boards. The acid test is whether it increases speed for a sanded-finish board, which is the standard for speed. At about 2 bucks a board, it's worth it. I read that the thickness of SNP is only 30 nanometers. That's about 300 times thinner than a hair, so any other sealer would be gunky by comparison, and not as durable. We need numbers from test tank trials...

    ReplyDelete
  38. Why seal up what is left open in a sanded finish? How is sealing that going to make the bottom any more noticeably frictionless?
Water on water is definitely the slickest. How does this make more water on water than a sanded finish?

Could this be another "Dumbo's Feather"?

  39. I haven't tried it yet because I forgot I have a new baby and don't surf anymore.

  40. I saw this stuff at surfexpo in Orlando.
And got to meet Darrick Doerner.
He was shorter than I expected; and,
I have no idea whether this product works or not.
Just trying to provide some objective info.

  41. I was very skeptical but open minded about SNP,went on there website, called, they were down to earth passionate about the sport we love, and answered all of my questions,,,,my opinion is to do the same,,trust me,,SNP works
    and is the real deal

  42. all my boards are too fast which is why I have to turn all the time to stay in the pocket area of the wave

have you got any products to slow baords down?

    ReplyDelete
  43. This doesn't really make sense to me. It seems like the microscopic holes that the product fills in would speed up the board rather than slow it down. This statement proves the theory behind the dimples on a golfball.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I know enough about nanotechnology to know that the surface pores on epoxy or polyester (or even glass) surfaces are large enough to catch or cause friction with water molecules. Sealing those pores can only be done at the nano-scale, so the theory is correct. How about a force-transducer test to compare SNP speed with a sanded finish in a test tank? Even if SNP only improves gloss surfaces to match the speed of a sanded surface, it will be a winner, since sanded finishes don't have the durability of glosscoats. As a final step in production, this could replace so-called "speed finishes", and enhance a board's life in a showroom. I read one of Doerner's quotes about SNP. He said it made his shortboards "berzerkly fast", but not squirrely.

  45. interesting product..I've always cleaned my boards and leash of wax to reduce friction & improve appearance...automotive polishes work effectively-also the (arm**r all)product is ideal for quick application....in consideration to our oceans carranuba wax(pure) or linseed oil might offer an eco alternative......just my thoughts whilst eating breakfast with my kids and enjoying the banter.Surfydad from the uk.

  46. Ok, i was skeptical and gave this a try.
We set up a camera and placed markers in the cameras view to be able to be sure we measured the same distance every time. A buddy and i have the same boards, a webber afterburner and a tokoro quad fish. He put the stuff on his boards and i didn't. we started off going straight making no turns and switching boards so the same surfer rode the same wave on the same board shape to make shure the only variable was the SNP stuff. Second we did some tricks to see if it gave a different feel.

The outcome was that after the session my friend said he felt like he was going faster. I didn't notice any difference while surfing. After carefully analyzing the footage we didn't saw any differece in speed. The waves were pretty much the same this whole session long (lasted for 2,5 hours) waves were shoulder hight (I'm 6'2 or 1,82 meters) and very consistent in france, mimizan.
Observing the speed on the movies we saw there was no increase with the SNP witch makes us believe it works as a placebo, just like the balance wrist bands. The claim that you have a 5% to 12% increase in speed is false according to my measurements.

I tested this with many other stuff as well, i make paintings on surfboards and make them waterproof with a satin or glossy finish witch have no effect on speed eighter.

Conclusion: "ITS ALL IN THE MIND"
