Craftsman Alert: Factory 101

Jon Pankopf of Factory 101 prints logo laminates for the majority of the surfboard labels in California.

He runs a small operation out of Encinitas, CA (ranked the 3rd best surf town in America by Surfer Magazine).

Jon is an excellent artist and always has interesting projects going on.

Jon's latest challenge is this new Chris Christenson 9 color skull laminate.

The vast majority of surfboard lams are 3 colors at the max.

Factory 101 prints stickers too. And where would the surf industry be without stickers? Nowhere, that's where.

The 9 color skull glassed out A-OK.

The Wax Buddy Chronicles

Manolo had Ben Matz's board at the shop last week and it had the thickest goopiest wax job I've ever seen so me and my Wax Buddy sprang into action.

The 5 fin Bonzer Mini-Merk

In early spring of this year I contacted Malcolm Campbell about shaping me a new Bonzer shortboard that was based on the short, thick and wide shortboards of the 1980's, but with modern refinements to the rocker and foil. The result was the Mini-Merk and I am stoked.
The Mini-Merk Bonzer5 is glassed with double layer 4 oz S-cloth deck, and single 4 oz S-cloth bottom, with a wetsanded gloss coat. The glass-job is seriously solid. I haven't been riding any of my other boards all summer, and the Mini-Merk still looks new 5 months later with barely any deck dents and zero dings.
The Mini-Merk is wide and thick for the fat mushy waves I've been surfing all summer. The lightweight and flexy bamboo Bonzer fins give this board a performance boost for vertical surfing I can't get out of my twin and quad Fishes.
The Mini-Merk after it was freshly airbrushed and up front waiting to get glassed. Thanks to my airbrusher Dad for taking the time to tape off all those lines.
The Mini-Merk at Fish Fry 5.
The Mini-Merk dims are: 5'11" length x 20" width x 2 9/16"
The airbrush was inspired by JM's jammies.
Ignore my funky looking waxjob, it melted in the car. The little traction pad is by D-Surf.

Some of you may remember seeing the unwaxed and unridden Mini-Merk at the Sacred Craft show in Ventura back in May. The Mini-Merk will be on display in the Surfy Surfy/Moonlight Glassing/Campbell Brothers Bonzer Surfboards booth at Sacred Craft October 10 and 11 if you want to check it out in person.
*Note-Malcolm can shape custom modified versions of the Mini-Merk if you aren't in love with those wide nose and tail dims.

Transparent Sea Voyage

I recently became acquainted with Chris Del Moro who sent me this email today announcing his new project,
"The reason for this journey is to hook up with great surfer, environmentalist and good friend Dave Rastovich to embark on a 700km journey from Byron Bay to Sydney Australia (think SF to LA). Our goal is to travel along side the annual migration of Humpback whales on their mission towards Antarctica. Through our journey we are hoping to spread awareness of the annual whale hunts happening in the Southern Whale Sanctuary as well as the 23,000 dolphins killed annually in Taiji, Japan. Dave, lens man Hilton Dawe and a rotating boat will travel in 16ft Hobie kayak/outrigger/sail boats hoping to tap into the raw powers that the ocean will bring our way."

Surfy Surfy in Slide Magazine #14

The New Zealand surf periodical, Slide Magazine is now available in the USA.

The new editor Ryan Smith convinced me to write an article about the AB3 and Fish Fry events over the last few years.

The auto focus on my digital camera is dying so you can't read the article off the photo. It doesn't matter anyway because I wrote the article at 3 o'clock in the morning so it's full of factual errors and rumors and lies.

This issue of Slide is also noteworthy because it features my very first Surfy Surfy print ad ever.

As soon as this puppy hits the newstands I'm just going to sit back and watch my hit counter go up and up.
