Stop the privatization of Swamis for an elite few
There is a proposed professional womens longboard contest slated to be held at Swamis, Encinitas California October 2010. It is my strong opinion that this and any contest at Swamis is a bad idea. This is a segregated contest that excludes the local surfing community. Swamis services several hundred surfers a day. Cutting off public access to Swamis will put pressure on other surf spots, creating frustration with overcrowding and dangerous situations.
The Rob Machado and Switchfoot Bro-Am contest have been very successful in the past because those events includes the local community. These contest have not been held at Swamis because the organizers know that Swamis is traditionally a no contest zone and they respect that. Even the Swamis Surfing Association has written in their by-laws not to have contest at Swamis.
The new CEO of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce Marshall Weinreb, a non-surfer, has declared this contest "The biggest thing to ever come to Encinitas." Mr. Weinreb has been misinformed. This contest does not carry the prestige that the organizers claim it has. The major surf media outlets don't even bother to cover it.
This contest will set a troubling precedent. The local surf community losing access to Swamis for 4 days is just the beginning. We are opening Pandora's Box. Imagine 3 or 4 contest a year at Swamis. The public could lose access to Swamis for 20 days a year. This has happened to many important surf spots worldwide.

Paramahansa Yogananda would not approve.
While we're at it, let's stop contests at The Lane and Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz. Several contests a year close down the most consistent surf spot on the west side of SC, The Lane. Almost every weekend in the summer is off limits at Pleasure Point with contest put on by local clubs, grom contests, school contests, and the rare full blown pro contest. Imagine if the THREE best surf spots on a given weekend were all hosting contests. It happens in SC. (Hook, 1st Peak, Lane)
In a backwards way I don't want to help you prevent this contest at your local because it could mean one less contest at mine.
Stop buying into the surf media machine, be unfriendly to new surfers or wanabies, buy only the minimum equipment needed to surf. STOP BUYING $75 board shorts!
no
it would be nice to see swamies with only a handful of people in the lineup instead of 200+ kooks. and why you want girls so much
No surf contests at Swamis! Period. End of conversation. We'll barricade the stairs and snake the longboards hags if need be!
get over it
How about just stop surfing at Swamis instead? Too many territorial pricks anyhow.
This is not about "localism" It is about keeping Swamis public and not selling it off to private interest groups.
stop all contests, get chicks outa the water, no more crummy african american degrading tv shows or movies, bomb your leash, make kooks take a test so they can know what spot to go learn etiquette, have kook patrols (kook=anyone who just cares about himself) to watch for fights, drop-ins peeing in the sea etc. start a campaign of surfing is for geeks, kooks, posers, squids, boners, chumps, pansies etc.
Amen to above. This "event" is nothing more than a revenue generator for the Ecinitas Chamber. I would love to pipe in with how all contests are this and that but I'll save it. All you anons grow nuts and post a name behind your lame. Spot on with regards to the Machado and B Steel's latest ventures being more of a community faire of sorts.
By "above" I didn't mean this clown ah.. above.
I suggest they move the contest to Newbreak!!!!
Liz (and others): It isn't about localism, it's about common sense and sensitivity to the community. Besides, isn't a contest permit the ultimate form of instant localism, keeping everyone out but a select few? Whether you invest in spending years at the break to develop local status, or lay down your money to be in the show, either way it's pay to play. It's just a question of who really profits.
if you make enough noise to your local politicians and have a good argument, i like your chances. i have no idea about how effective internet petitions are, maybe they're great, but i kind of doubt it.
some guys up here took a cause to the redondo beach city council and got them to take an official stand against the MLPA proposals with the most restrictive suggestions. that opened my eyes as i really thought that would never happen..
i appreciate that we live in an online world, but i'd be directing every bit of energy into getting your local government to take a stand.... my guess is that they're a lot more concerned with what you residents have to say in person than what a bunch of people from LA, ventura and orange counties have to say in an online petition (despite the fact that those people may surf there all the time).
good luck jp

Liz-please open you eyes and understand that its sort of an unspoken rule among anybody who cares at all about surfing in North County that contest just don't happen at Swamis.
We understand people are moving into North County every year from out of town (you included) which is fine- we can't stop that. The only thing we want is for all new comers to respect the place we grew up in. You can talk about the stoke and all the that fluffy stuff but once special places like Swamis change-they change for good, that's why we are such "crab asses" when things like this pop up.
We have had too many things change for the worse because of narrower minded outsiders trying to make a quick buck and all we are trying to do is hold on to one of the few unspoiled gems around here.
"i say humbug to localism & being territorial"
your an idiot! your missing the point.
I don't live down that way, but how is shutting down the break 'sharing the stoke?"
I would definitely try to stop contests at Swamis. Why just sit by and let it happen? It's not localism - it's the opposite. Anyone is free to surf the place when there is no contest. Just paddle out.
As the first poster said, Santa Cruz is rotten with lame contests that shut down breaks all the time. What about those of us that surf a break whenever it's surfable, put in time on the crappiest days, battle crowds constantly and then on a day when it is actually good, you roll down there and there is some weak contest full of people that never surf the place shutting it down? That's bullshit.
fuck contest.surfers are the enmies.down south is so gone dose it matter.
yeah stay away from the politics surfy surfy. find another one of the hundreds of amazing breaks we have in north county for a change of pace if you just can't stand watching and supporting the best female longboarders in the world slide a few beautiful waves.
I watch beautiful longboard girls slide Swamis all the time. They are my friends. I hoot for them as I paddle over the shoulder and they hoot for me too. My mom was a competitive surfer in the 60's.
Don't be fooled into thinking this is a one time groovy event at Swamis. This is going to open the floodgates. Get ready to lose access to Swamis 30-40 days a year or more if this contest happens.
Every year there should be a limited amount of contests held at any particular spot!!! Also, the Swamis surf club should have there contests AT SWAMIS, NOT CARDIFF!!!
lindabenson01@aol.com
email her and tell her its time to get her head out of her ass and stop this thing!
We know she is one of the best females surfers of all time..blah...blah...blah..whatever.
NO CONTEST AT SWAMIS!
And we thought it couldn't get any worse...Stand Up Paddle Team Relay during the contest...read it for yourselves...thewwlc.com
And there it is...Swamis turns into Cardiff...
stop all contests, get chicks outa the water, no more crummy african american degrading tv shows or movies, bomb your leash, make kooks take a test so they can know what spot to go learn etiquette, have kook patrols (kook=anyone who just cares about himself) to watch for fights, drop-ins peeing in the sea etc. start a campaign of surfing is for geeks, kooks, posers, squids, boners, chumps, pansies etc. ok mike, heres my nuts, come and get 'em! i noticed you agreed but anyway. surfing sucks! lets just all get along wha wha wha! i'd like to add hooting for your bestest friend on anything less than a 6' barrel is an annoyance to everyone else in the water sept fer kooks like the one hooting and i dont care how much you screwed your client on your broker deal or how you new chinese board rides just like my custom shapers board or how your grandkids are doing well in tee ball or how jenny really trounced the boys on her hi school surf team where, shees the ONLY girl of course, dang what ever happened to true soul? guess we traded it in for contests and fat cats stuffin the errrrrrr boardshorts with "suerfer wear!"
just paddle out anyway.
Wrong. This contest has been getting huge coverage over the years. The, so called, Swamis locals that are speaking up here are just scared that these girls will make them look bad. Stop dropping all of the
"local" comments. Talk about private. Locals are kooks. You are all welcome to surf my "regular" spot any time.
Aloha.
Itn't it funny that everyone who wants the contest ISN'T FROM HERE?
Anyone defending this contest is delusional. A bunch of kook girls who can hardly surf led by someone trying desperately to cling to some sort of legacy.
Thanks for doing this JP. Stop the contest!!
Well at least Lizzy had the nads to post up as Liz. Anyway, can anyone say that if this were a mens event that all you anon's would be getting all "share the stoke" and so on. No, I don't think you would. I posted my comment having not yet gone to the link to see that it's the womens lb event. I can assure you that my, as well as other crab ass remarks have nothing to do with gender - or localism ( as a local that rarely surfs that point.) Can you women say that about your counters? To sum up, this is about the ladies feeling validated in the sport and you are, with me anyway. Still, no contests at Swamis. Period.
Those of you that are long time surfy surfy lurkers like myself, will remember that it was at one time heavily steeped in political banter, JP even ghost writing for a certian Surfer publication on spicey topics others wouldn't touch... Eventually they succumbed to corporate megalo pressure & he was forced back underground deep into dark luecadia... Its not all about board porn... I can see the treachurous pattern already forming, you have the city "approved" statue, a main st. I've heard there's even plans slated on the ballot calling for a nice pier off the point with a shiney Rubys on the end... The contests are coming! The contests are coming!
Huge coverage? Seriously what huge coverage? Nobody cares about professional longboarding. Even France ditched this contest because it's a joke.
"Getting huge coverage for years..." ??????? Are you serious? I guess huge coverage for a women's longboard but thats not saying much , is it?
I respect all the women who are doing their thing with this whole pro longboarding thing, alot of people don't get it, but hey it's your thing and more power to you.
But lets be real, unless its a men's WCT event , no one really cares about surf contests other than the one's participating in it.
Claiming that the Swami's "locals" are targeting the contest because it includes women, is just plain ignorant and a sign that the one's supporting this contest are fighting a losing battle.
Contests are not wanted, men or women's contests-doesn't matter, by anyone that regularly comes to swamis for relaxation.
This doesn't only include the people in the water-we have people that sitting in their cars in the parking lot jamming on guitars, joggers who use the stairs for exercise, families having picnics on the roadside park, little kids playing with sand down by dabbers-its more than just the "locals" in the water, its a community space that is important to all of us.
Every year during the roxy jam down at cardiff we get an influx of the cotestants coming up to Swamis to paddle around in between heats. Does anyone really give a shit? For the most part no (sure you might get the oddball remark from an old timer-but this happens everyday, contest or no contest)
There are a group of women who surf Swamis day in day out because they love the place, and even though the number of men in the water far outweigh the women in the water, they still do it because they want to and need to.
Saying the the community doesn't want the contest because it includes women is just plain stupid! We don't want the contest because its a fucking contest, period!
No contest at swamis!
Sorry for my ignorance But what stops you from surfing the break anyways? Some big thug? Hope that works out for you!
Contests, no matter when or where, are better left to football dorks. Heat sheets, scaffolding, jerseys, air horns, banners, microphones, schwag booths, sponsor and club affiliations, priority buoys, and barfmops just complicate the beautifully simple act of surfboarding. Why would anybody want any of that shit interfering? Why not just go surfboarding by yourself?
That said, some of you are crab asses.
I've probably had as many memorable Swamis waves as the next crab ass, but a "pristine gem"? It's a roadside SoCal parking lot spot full of Surfrider-stickered Yukons and cell-phone bros, no?
Just looking for another opportunity to use "crab ass."
Lowers is already an armpit-just have ALL contests there.
kill pro surfers dead their just glf playing bmw driving corperate employees in baggy shorts.
