Sacred Craft Surfboard Show this weekend

I am on the discussion panel about outsourcing surfboards this Sunday, Oct 14 at 11 am. It should be a train wreck so be sure to come out and see me.

Moonlight does not have a booth but we will have a Campbell Bros Bonzer displayed in Danny Hess's booth and I will be lurking around the show all weekend and it would be cool to meet all you bloggers in person.

It's at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Activity Center Expo Hall, Del Mar Ca.

COST: $5, under 16 FREE, all are automatically entered into the surfboard raffle. There will be food, beer, coffee and bands.

  4. I don't think the discussion will be a train wreck at all. Consumers and producers need a forum to discuss what is important to them.

    Globalization & trade have been debatable issues for a long time. In the past, economists would state how “everybody” benefits from free trade in the form of lower prices. Tell that to steel workers in Pittsburg or textile workers in the Southeast. Without jobs, lower prices on towels and t-shirts are not that exciting to people in South Carolina. Lower prices on cars b/c of less expensive Canadian steel and competition from imports do not make life any easier for a U.S. steel worker (or domestic auto workers).

    The bottom line is that protectionist policies (taxes, quotas, regulation etc.) do cause upward price pressure for goods and services. The question is do surfers want to pick up the associated extra costs? If there are environmental concerns or concern for people in the industry the answer just might be – yes.

    Personally I think that Moonlight offers a unique service that would be hard to duplicate abroad. There will always be a market for personal service and high quality glassing close to home. (just as there will always be a market for a hand made motorcycle vs. a production bike – replace with sailboats etc.).

    Wetsuits and board shorts are another story…just as debatable. From Matuse to O’Neill jobs are created in the U.S. and abroad…
